Titled “The Old World
and the New World”, the king of showmanship, Karl Lagerfeld created a dusty,
crumbled, full of rubble post apocalyptic theatre set at the Grand Palais in
Paris to present his monochromatic Fall 2013 Haute Couture collection.
The collection presented
in the background of a futuristic cityscape featured Chanel tweeds, wools, silk, array of jackets some
with metallic embellishment and armour like detailing, embroidered tulle, drop-waisted
dresses, flared skirts, tutu skirts, underskirts,
wide belt, coat-dress, origami patterns and generous layering. The pieces were accessorised
with thigh high footwear/legging/boots which Karl preferred to call stocking
shoes and not boots.
The collection was definitely
Karl’s way of embracing modernity and looking towards the future without
failing to integrate the craftsmanship and essence of Haute Couture. He kept it
exclusive or shall I say Haute exclusive.
