Prabal Gurung‘s Fall Winter 2013 collection was a
celebration of women empowerment. The collection had a strong essence of
military style as the designer took his inspiration from various sources
including a Time magazine article, “The Best Inventions of 2012” that featured
body armor specially designed with a woman's body in mind. He also took his
inspiration from a Ukranian women vigilant group who are fighting against human
trafficking in their country by teaching the art of self-defence.
As for the collection, Prabal embraced feminity in his
military collection by sliming the cuts thus celebrating feminine curves. Peplum
jacket skilfully tailored to accentuate waistline, slim cargo pants, parka with
fur patch pockets, dresses with cut out details, slim denim skirt, cowl sweater
with bare shoulders, satin cocktail dresses, epaulets, gold buttons, ruffle, brocade,
folkloric embroidery and jacquard were some of the key pieces and feature of
this collection that was in a colour palette of army green, olive, black, navy,
red and ivory.
Drapes were another highlight of his collection. Prabal’s
art of draping (some resembling Sari drape), definitely added an element of
elegance to this strong collection.
"It's really about embracing femininity whoever you
are. As
far as I'm concerned, the more women are empowered, the better off we are”,
says Prabal. The statement is definitely true, especially at times when we talk
about gender equality and women’s right in today’s world.
