Alexander McQueen Spring Summer 2013

Honeybee was Sarah Burton’s inspiration for the Alexander McQueen’s Spring Summer 2013 collection. The honeycomb inspired collection was a spectacular treat, at times extreme and a fine display of Burton and her team’s unique workmanship. The ultra feminine collection was a celebration of female forms, empowerment, nature and erotica.

The key pieces of the collection were – Honeycomb motif waist jackets with exaggerated hips, giving a peplum effect. Gold on black jacquard skinny pants, gold embroidered bustier tops with tortoise cages, ruffled mini skirts, thigh high fishnets, suits made of organza and lace, corseted and cocktail dresses with appliqué flowers and elaborate 3 dimensional tulle and organza ball gowns with vibrant appliqué details.

Outfits were accessorized with large cut out of beekeeper veils, chokers encrusted with jewelled bees, gold belts, tortoise cuffs and crystal wedge heels.

The focal point of this strong and ultra feminine collection was the hyper exaggerated female silhouette which was reminiscent of Vargas girls.

As for Sarah’s interpretation of the collection, this is what she had to say - "It was looking at womanhood and embracing the female form. I wanted it to feel sensual. I wanted to have a lightness to it and I wanted it to feel erotic but not in an overly fleshy kind of way."
