Revealed: Rei Kawakubo /Comme des Garçons is the subject of the 2017 Met Gala

On Friday, the Metropolitan Museum of Art revealed the new subject for its 2017 Costume Institute exhibition and gala: “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons.” As an exception, this is the first time the Gala has chosen to focus on a living designer since Yves Saint Laurent in 1983.

Earlier this year, Andrew Bolton, Met’s curator had already hinted museum’s interest in exhibiting the legendry designer’s work. In a statement to WWD he had mentioned: “I’d love to do an exhibit with living designers — John Galliano, Rei Kawakubo, Azzedine Alaïa and Issey Miyake — but there was a policy at the museum that was put into place after the Saint Laurent show. Diana Vreeland did in the Eighties where we don’t do shows on living designers.” According to Vogue, Bolton mentioned “Rei Kawakubo is one of the most important and influential designers of the past forty years.” He further added, “By inviting us to rethink fashion as a site of constant creation, recreation, and hybridity, she has defined the aesthetics of our time.”

The exhibit will capture the conceptual, deconstructed aesthetics of the designer by displaying 120 of her designs, going as far back as her first runway collection in 1981 all the way to her most recent shows. Keeping binary themes, the exhibition will include East and West, male and female, past and present.

One thing is for sure, known for her anti fashion aesthetics, MET Gala 2017 will be an exciting place -all set to challenge the conventional boundaries of a red carpet. The Rei Kawakubo / Comme des Garçons exhibition will open to the public on Thursday 4 May.
